Cinéma : Presented out of competition at Cannes in May 2026, the first part of an ambitious diptych which tells the story of the national hero, from his refusal to capitulate in 1940 to the Allied victory. With a stated desire: to address more particularly the younger generations.
It is one of the 22 films supported by the Region presented at Cannes 2026.
Sorti le 3 juin 2026, The Battle of Gaulle – The Iron Age is signed Antonin Baudry, also author of the comic stripQuai d’Orsay.
It is part of a diptych of which the second part (entitled J’écris ton nom, to be seen from July 3, 2026) was produced without help from the Region. The 2 films are inspired by the workDe Gaulle: a certain idea of France,by the British historian Julian T. Jackson.Â
The first part begins in 1940, when De Gaulle, refusing the capitulation of France, goes into exile in London to organize the resistance, and it ends in 1942. The second part is devoted to the period 1943-1944.
Played by Simon Abkarian, the national hero is shown in all his human dimension: alone, plagued by doubts, vulnerable… A choice which aims to touch young people, to allow them to identify.
With also Simon Russel Beale (Sir Winston Churchill), Benoît Magimel (General Koenig), Felix Kysyl (Jean Moulin), Niels Schneider (General Leclerc)…
Antonin Baudry thus justifies the title “The Battle of Gaulle” : “It is both the fight of a man but also that of a people and a country.”Regarding the subtitle, he explains that“The Iron Age refers to this mythological period where injustice, corruption, lies and betrayal dominated, and which followed the Golden Age, where men lived happily and without suffering.”
