As the end of Emmanuel Macron’s presidential mandate approaches, there is no doubt that a profusion of books will attempt to retrace the last two five-year terms, with more or less relevance and more or less success. And one of these works will have been written in Pont-l’Évêque (Calvados)…: Jacques Lefrancq publishes L’Égaré self-published at the beginning of June 2026.
“The forty books on Macron have been written either by journalists or by politicians… I want to bring the perspective of an average citizen, outside of any school of thought…” explains the author, aged 86 and based in Pont-l’Évêque for six years, after a first life in Saint-Martin-du-Bec, a small village near Le Havre.
It is there that this not-so-ordinary citizen was a teacher, school director, town hall secretary and deputy mayor, mixing his existence with the institutions of the Republic. There also that he published his first two books, one on the history of his village and an account of the agricultural orphanage which was there, The chicote and the rosarysold 1,000 copies and won the literary prize from the Seine-Maritime Chamber of Agriculture in 2011.
In L’ÉgaréJacques Lefrancq paints a psychological portrait of the president, and wishes to emphasize: “This is not a political or polemical book. I simply wanted to analyze his personality. ” He also indicates that he voted for him.  Today he disappoints me, but I give him many advantages. »
A text in the second person, addressed to the president
The author justifies his title by his analysis of the character: “I think he got lost in politics.” Developing, he explains that he “surprised the French. He slipped through the windows to reach the Élysée, but he remained a little above ground. He is basically a financier, who thinks like a financier, not like a president. Some philosophers consider that he is out of place. »
Passionate about current events as much as about writing, Jacques Lefrancq wanted, through this book, “to present analyzes that have been running through my head for several years.” He thus formulates “negative criticism”, on Emmanuel Macron’s relationship with the French, and “other positive criticism”, particularly on the international level. A general idea which is summed up on the cover, produced with its advertising thread, where the head of state is drawn with a tricolor flag in his eye, but a large European flag and a world map at head level.
Main originality of L’Égaré in form: the text is written in the second person, addressing the president directly. “ I want to let him know what a simple citizen thinks…” explains the former elected official of his village, who is already planning to send a copy to the Élysée.
And for more ordinary readers, Jacques Lefrancq, who, due to self-publishing, must manage to find points of sale, has planned to explore local bookstores. But he can already sell his book in person in Pont-l’Évêque. 500 copies are just waiting to be read.
