The Ministry of Tourism published a report on Friday showing a significant drop in international tourist numbers. During the first four months of 2026, Cambodia welcomed 1.3 million visitors, which represents a decline of almost 46% compared to the 2.4 million recorded during the same period last year.
Issuer markets in sharp decline
China, Vietnam and the United States remain the three main countries of origin for travelers. However, arrivals from these markets show a downward trajectory. The kingdom thus recorded 331,199 Chinese visitors (down 14.5%), 312,021 Vietnamese tourists (a drop of 24%) and 80,300 American nationals (a decrease of 11.5%).
Analysis of the causes of this slowdown
Several factors explain this negative trend according to Thong Mengdavid, deputy director at the Center for China-ASEAN Studies at the Cambodian University of Technology and Science. The latter discusses the regional economic slowdown, the problems linked to online scams as well as the impact of the border dispute with Thailand.
The conflict in the Middle East, which caused a surge in fuel prices and disruptions in air traffic, also contributed to this sharp declinehe said in an interview with Xinhua.
A pillar of the national economy impacted
Tourism constitutes one of the four fundamental pillars of the Cambodian economy. It supports the country’s activity alongside agriculture, the construction and real estate sector, as well as the export of clothing, shoes and travel items. This decrease in foreign attendance therefore poses a challenge for the overall growth of the kingdom.
“What to do, then? The government is striving to increase initiatives to attract new visitors or to win back Chinese customers in particular. Promotional campaigns are organized and air connections are developed.
However, the causes of this decline are above all exogenous. Cambodia has no control over the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, nor over the price of fuel, nor over a particularly gloomy global economy. Perhaps the country could nevertheless make an effort in terms of cleanliness. Too many areas, even tourist areas, are invaded by plastic waste, which tarnishes the image of the Kingdom.
So come on!
Despite everything, Cambodia offers an exceptional tourist offer. The country is safe: there are no attacks or scams against visitors. Between the extreme kindness of its population, the variety of its landscapes and its unique cultural wealth, the Kingdom has it all.
I can therefore only invite my readers to come back and become ambassadors of the country. It is, paradoxically, the ideal time to go there, far from the usual hordes of tourists. You can thus enjoy absolute tranquility on the beaches of Angkor as well as in the hotels and restaurants. This lower crowd also pulls their prices down, while guaranteeing an even higher quality of service, where we feel privileged.
Coming now is a brilliant idea: it is the assurance of a stay of rare quality, but it is also a precious gesture to support a population which has already suffered too much.
