The first woman elected to the presidency of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), Claire Thoury, 37, stands out within a consultative assembly which, in a century of existence, gives the impression of purring. Coming from the associative world, this sociologist from Cavaillon, specialist in youth movements, dusts off the discourse and the method.

She was on Thursday June 4, 2026 at Fer à Cheval, a soap factory for the social and solidarity economy, before visiting a social center and meeting an association of young people committed to the northern neighborhoods.

You are a woman, young compared to your predecessors and from the associative movement. Is the EESC changing?

Being a woman has earned me a lot of feedback from people who support the women’s cause. It’s like a glass ceiling is shattered, even though there is still work to be done. But if we rewind a little, the EESC’s starting point, a hundred years ago, was to support peace. It is social democracy that comes to the aid of political democracy.

The trade union and economic world has long presided over its destiny; it is the place where the social partners meet. The associative world has joined forces…
