“There are political and ethical obstacles”: why the French do not want to invest their savings in defense financing | TF1 Info

  • A large majority of French people (71%) are reluctant to invest their savings in defense.
  • The Bpifrance Defense fund, born from the will of the State, has not achieved its objectives.
  • The ethical question is a significant obstacle for savers, even if there is “a greater chance of making gains with this investment”.

Seven out of ten French people do not want to invest their savings in defense. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Iran have, however, pushed the governments under Emmanuel Macron, like their European neighbors, to revise the budget allocated to their army upwards.

The Bpifrance Defense fund was also created thanks to the will of the State. He proposes to invest in French and European companies in the arms sector. For now, 100 million euros have been collected out of the 450 million hoped for.

“There are a lot of issues raised among the French when it comes to investing in defense”notes Catherine André, LCI political columnist. Political, ethical and moral obstacles… A whole bunch of factors that do not encourage them to invest.
