Seventeen films will be screened as part of the “Physionomy of cinema during the Dôi moi (Renewal)” program at DANAFF, from June 28 to July 4.

The films presented as part of this program will not only revive memories linked to Vietnamese cinema, but also highlight the milestones and transformations that have shaped the Vietnamese film industry over the past four decades.

Together, these films offer a portrait of Vietnamese cinema through different eras, from works reflecting social realities to more recent explorations of narrative techniques and human expression.

For local movie buffs, this program is more than just an opportunity to rewatch classics: it’s also an opportunity to rekindle treasured memories.

For younger audiences, the films in the program also offer a valuable insight into social life across different eras, whether it be aesthetics, mentalities or the way people communicated and interacted with each other.

The screening of these films is important not only for the public, but also for the filmmakers who made them. Director Lê Hoà ng declared that this event had a particular significance, because it allowed him to look back on his creative journey and rethink the lasting value of his works in the current cinematic landscape.

Opportunities like this are rare, allowing film fans to rediscover these works and reflect on how they resonate with audiences today.

Alongside the screenings, the public will have the opportunity to interact with artists and filmmakers during discussions exploring the evolution of Vietnamese cinema over the last 40 years of revival.

These events will also provide a better understanding of the context in which the films were created, the production conditions of the time and the importance of each work in the broader evolution of Vietnamese cinema.

While the 4th edition of DANAFF strives to connect Asian cinema to the world, the program “Physiognomy of cinema during the Dôi moi period” brings a unique dimension to the cinematic presence of the host country. — VNA/VIÂ
