A turning point in the war in Ukraine? The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, proposed a face-to-face meeting to Vladimir Putin on Thursday June 4, in an open letter. He also offered the Russian president a “ceasefire complete” time to negotiate to end the war.
“Ukraine proposes to end this war through direct engagement between you and us. I propose a meeting”wrote Volodymyr Zelensky in this letter addressed to Vladimir Putin, wishing “decide on a clear date”. He added that kyiv was “ready for a complete ceasefire for the duration of the negotiations.” kyiv has repeatedly proposed an extended ceasefire to encourage negotiations. But Moscow rejects this idea, arguing that it would allow the Ukrainian army to strengthen.
“Today’s front line is the line from which diplomacy must begin”also wrote the Ukrainian president, who has rarely addressed his Russian counterpart directly, but has already proposed a meeting. Volodymyr Zelensky can meet Vladimir Putin “Ã tout moment” in Moscow, responded Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov in comments cited by Russian state media, adding that the Russian president had not yet seen the letter in question.
For his part, the American president, Donald Trump, estimated that a meeting between the two men would be “super”, while affirming that the two countries will have to make compromises. The leader had promised to end the war in Ukraine on the first day of his return to the White House, but has since failed to narrow the differences between kyiv and Moscow.
