While American airports are being affected by a mini “shut down”, airlines are getting frustrated and Delta Air Lines, one of the largest, has removed some privileges granted to lawmakers, such as escorts or baggage services. No budget, no favors. Delta has decided that lawmakers – and their entourage – would be treated like any other passenger, based on each person’s SkyMiles status.

Thousands of Americans on technical unemployment. Since February 14, the funding for the DHS – the department responsible for security checks at airports – has been frozen due to a deep disagreement between Democrats and Republicans in Congress over immigration police practices (ICE), which are highly contested on the left.

Due to this partial shutdown, thousands of federal employees are on technical unemployment, while thousands of others, in essential roles, continue to work. This includes employees of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) responsible for security checks, with tens of thousands working without pay since March 13. Absenteeism and resignations have increased.

Lines, sometimes several hours long, have formed at many airports to pass through security checks (cabin baggage and personal effects scanners, metal detectors) and reach the boarding area. Many passengers miss their flights as a result.

“Due to the impact on resources from the lengthy government budget paralysis, Delta will temporarily suspend special services for members of Congress flying on Delta,” the company told AFP. According to Delta, it has become “extremely difficult in the current environment to take care of its teams and customers.”
