While Patrick Bruel faces serious accusations, the artist has chosen to withdraw from Les Enfoirés and cancel his summer tour. A decision awaited by many festival organizers, who now find themselves facing new challenges. If this announcement brings a certain relief to the teams concerned, it also forces them to urgently review their programming. A few weeks before the opening of the festivals, the search for replacements accelerates, while Patrick Bruel faces new testimonies.
Organizers relieved after cancellation
Targeted by several accusations of rape and sexual assault, Patrick Bruel is going through a particularly delicate period. Over the weeks, the testimonies have multiplied and several elected officials have requested the cancellation of his concerts. In this context, the singer finally decided to give up his summer festival tour. He also canceled the first three performances planned at the Cirque d’Hiver Bouglione, in Paris, from June 16 to 18. A decision which quickly caused professionals in the sector to react. Many wondered about the consequences of continuing the concerts and the way in which the public would have received the artist’s presence.
In the columns of Le Parisien, several organizers expressed their relief. “We are not judges,” declared Albert Gucci, director of the Zénith de Toulon and organizer of the Le Son By Toulon festival. However, he explains that his team wondered about the progress of the concerts if they had been maintained. Same observation for Pierre Betton, organizer of the Les Grandes Marées festival in Jullouville. “We are really relieved to be able to turn the page,” he confided. According to him, this situation had been creating tensions for several weeks. He also believes that the cancellation had become inevitable and that it now allows the teams to focus on the future.
Programming to be rethought urgently
If the announcement puts an end to a period of uncertainty, it also opens a new, particularly complex phase for the organizers. A few weeks before the launch of the summer season, several festivals must quickly find artists capable of replacing such a popular headliner. Pierre Betton thus ensures that the Axel Bauer concert, scheduled for July 24, is maintained. At the same time, his team is actively working on new programming. Two artists should soon be announced to complete the line-up. This reorganization, however, requires significant mobilization of the teams, who must deal with very tight deadlines and significant logistical constraints. Certain events have already found a solution. This is particularly the case of the Bastogne Summer Festival, in Belgium. Others, however, continue their research. Albert Gucci recognizes that the situation remains difficult to manage. “The spectators have organized themselves with the current programming. A month and a half before the festival, it’s complicated,” he underlines. The organizer also recalls the financial issues linked to this type of decision. Replacing Patrick Bruel represents an additional cost, with no guarantee of attracting as many audiences. “We use public money for our festival,” he recalls, before adding with humor that he would not refuse a call from Dua Lipa. The next few days therefore promise to be decisive.
