Police, fire respond to shooting incident in Sandy

SANDY Ore. (KPTV) – Multiple people are dead and an officer with the Sandy Police Department was shot and seriously injured in Sandy on Sunday evening, according to Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey.

Just before 4 p.m., officers with SPD and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office were sent to the area of Ross Ave and Evans Street on the report of a domestic disturbance and shooting.

During that response, Chief Huskey said “officers and deputies came under a gunfire and returned fire at this time.â€

Witnesses at the scene told FOX 12 they heard multiple gunshots.

One SPD officer was shot multiple times and was rushed to the hospital, where they are expected to survive, Chief Huskey said.

However, the police chief said there were multiple other victims who died.

Sandy Police also said at about 8:30 p.m. that the suspect was in custody and the shelter in place order had been lifted.

Shortly after 5 p.m., police asked people who live near the incident to lock their doors and stay inside. Later, after determining the suspect was inside a house in the area, they took the suspect into custody just before 8 p.m.

Chief Huskey said there was no further danger to the community, and the investigation is continuing.

“This is a traumatic event for our community and the Sandy Police Department, and I know many people are grieving. I ask everyone in our community to keep the victims and our injured officer and families, friends, and all the first responders in their thoughts tonight,†Chief Huskey said.
