Tehran and Washington have been engaged for weeks in indirect discussions with a view to putting a lasting end to the war in the Middle East. The American president is currently studying a provisional agreement which would make it possible to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program. Here is what we know:

CEASEFIRE : The agreement provides for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire in progress since April 8 between Iran and the United States, according to sources in Washington cited by AFP. The Strait of Hormuz “must be opened immediately”, indicated Donald Trump on his Truth Social network, and Tehran must commit to demining it. Iranian sources cited by the Fars news agency affirmed that the current version does not provide for an opening of the strait free of “toll charges”.

STRAIT OF HOMUZ: Iran has maintained strict control over the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the war, while the United States has imposed what Tehran describes as a naval blockade of its ports and coasts since April 13. The United States would lift this blockade, according to the American site Axios, if commercial traffic resumes in the strait. Tehran would also be allowed to sell oil thanks to a suspension of American sanctions.

FROZEN ASSETS: Tehran is seeking the release of around $24 billion in assets frozen abroad, including part in Qatar – where a delegation of senior Iranian officials visited earlier this week. Half of these funds must be made available at the time of the announcement of the memorandum of understanding and “Until this payment is made, Iran will not enter a next phase of negotiations”indicated sources at the Fars agency

NUCLÉAIRE ARME: Concerning the Iranian nuclear program, a major point of contention, with the United States and Israel accusing the Islamic Republic of wanting to acquire nuclear weapons – which it denies, “there are no negotiations on the nuclear issue” At this stage, Iranian spokesperson Esmaïl Baghaï said on Friday. Iran wishes to address this issue later, after signing the memorandum of understanding, but Donald Trump refuses.
