The vinyl exchange is celebrating its anniversary with more than 10,000 records and ten DJs gathered in Sète on June 7.
The cake started running in 2020, and ten editions later… it’s still running! For its anniversary vintage, the Vinyl Exchange returns on Sunday June 7 with a special program that will bring together collectors, music lovers and those nostalgic for old-fashioned records.
Organized by Chichois Production, the event has become over the years a meeting that brings together young and old around the black record. In an era dominated by digital, the stock exchange confirms that vinyl remains a living cultural object, capable of bringing together all generations around music. “Today, all artists reprint their albums on vinylobserves Grégory “Fatalbazuka”, from Chichois Prod, on the turntables of the meeting. All generations are getting into it. The other side of the coin is that there are more and more record conventions. It’s even saturation. There are exchanges every weekend, it’s too much… And in the end, you only find the aficionados. Meanwhile, prices are rising. With the Sète stock exchange, we created the opposite, with accessible prices, in a small place. It’s on a human scale.”
“The first years were really the thing between friends…”
Ten editions are also the opportunity to measure the progress made. “We feel the evolution. At the beginning, we did that at Pascal Larderet’s (before the record store opened Discomaniaks, rue de Tunis, Editor’s note)se remémore Grégory, qui lançait sa première bourse aux disques dès 2011 à Sète. We were a group of friends. And then, we looked for another place. It happened around a discussion with Jérôme (Panine, manager of the Brasserie Singulière, Editor’s note). He told us OK. The first years, it was really the thing between friends…
The event has also built a real artistic identity, thanks to its visual universes, its original posters and its teasers. A signature which today fully contributes to its reputation. But who also played tricks on him. “During the third edition, we faced a huge controversy. Our poster, created by the artist Jo Hart, presented two pin-ups in swimsuits. We were accused of being sexist. It was a real bad buzz.” The following year, with Jérémy (Jardel, his ex-partner at Chichois Production, editor’s note), we made the same poster, except that instead of pin-ups… And there, it created a huge buzz! the image of the woman. We just wanted to laugh. Since then, the meeting has only grown.
Always for all tastes… and all budgets
Two years ago, to respond to a request from the city regarding the use of public space, the event was moved to Oh Gobie. Since then, the recipe has continued to work. On the program, this year again, more than 10,000 vinyls will be on sale, offered by ten record stores who have come to share their selections and their rarities. Rock, funk, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, soul, electro, original soundtracks or even French variety… All styles will be represented.
Ten DJs will mix exclusively on vinyl, faithful to the spirit of the event. A special 10th edition raffle will also allow visitors to win one of the ten prizes up for grabs. A bar and restaurant area will be set up on site, accompanied by several artistic surprises imagined for this symbolic edition.
