Is Trump a champion of renunciation?
He is above all a proponent of a transactional approach, placing American interests first. In this logic, alliances are not paramount. I met in Washington a veteran of the Trump 1 and 2 administrations, who explained that we had to integrate the fact that the United States, under Trump, can make promises without necessarily keeping them. We have seen the way in which the Trump administration abuses the traditional allies of the United States, like the vehement speech of Vice-President JD Vance in Munich in 2025. He pointed out what he considers to be internal threats in Europe: immigration and a divergence of values between Europe and the United States.
Is NATO going to survive à Trump ?
The crisis is serious. The Greenlandic episode raised fears of forceful action by NATO’s main power against some of its allies. The tension has temporarily calmed but the risk could reappear. This diplomatic and political practice of maintaining uncertainty is part of Trump’s strategy: a form of “crazy strategy”, which aims to suggest that he is capable of anything and everything. Faced with this type of attitude, we must not be too conciliatory: Trump loathes the weak, the “losers”.
On Ukraine and Greenland, has Europe made itself respected by Trump?
The interdependencies between the two shores of the Atlantic are strong, which makes the European position particularly complicated. The Europeans had to advance on a ridge line. However, the United States has no interest in withdrawing from NATO, because this allows them to maintain control of the European security architecture. Europe today remains very dependent on American capabilities. Strategic autonomy cannot be decreed.
