Paris Saint-Germain
It is a date that poses a problem. While the quarterfinals of the Champions League football against Liverpool are scheduled for April 8 and 14, PSG will also have to face a difficult trip to Lens, their rival in Ligue 1, on April 11 at 5 p.m.
Not ideal for approaching the Champions League clash in the best conditions for the capital club, which has officially requested to postpone the Ligue 1 match against their closest title contender.
A proposal that has since been firmly rejected by Lens, who announced in a statement their intention not to change the date.
Securing 5th Place in the UEFA Index
A response that prompted a reaction from PSG. Those close to the club emphasized that this “supervised and transparent” action does not in any way call into question the championship.
“The performances of French clubs engaged in European competitions benefit French football as a whole, in a context where France currently occupies the 6th place in the UEFA index for the 2025-2026 season,” the club assures. It recalls that Strasbourg, which will play the quarterfinals of the Conference League against Mainz on Thursdays, April 9 and 16, followed the same procedure with the French League to postpone their Ligue 1 match against Brest between the two European matches.
“The stakes are high: securing 5th place in the UEFA index, which signifies better representation of French football in European competitions, with up to seven qualified clubs,” PSG points out. The success of French clubs in Europe also brings direct benefits to all professional clubs, not just those involved in these competitions. The prospect of having two French clubs reach the semi-finals of European competitions represents an important opportunity for Ligue 1, both in sporting and economic terms.
An Important Opportunity for Ligue 1
And to insist: “This type of rescheduling has been implemented regularly by the LFP in the past, to the benefit of many French clubs engaged in European competitions.”
It is worth noting that Paris Saint-Germain had previously requested, and obtained, a postponement of their match against Nantes to have a better preparation between the two clashes against Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16.
A decision is expected this Thursday following the LFP’s board meeting.
