Iran executed a man convicted of espionage on Sunday, the first known execution for espionage committed during the recent war between Iran, Israel and the United States.

According to the Mizan Online site, linked to the Iranian judiciary, Mojtaba Kian was hanged early Sunday morning after being found guilty of transmitting information linked to Iranian defense industry units to “the enemy.”

Iranian authorities say he sent data on the country’s defense capabilities during the nearly 40-day war started on February 28 by Israeli-US strikes against Iran.

According to Mizan, Mojtaba Kian would have transmitted coordinates and information on facilities producing components linked to Iranian defense industries to hostile networks. The judicial media also claims that a targeted site in Iran was struck during the war after the transmission of this information.

His execution came less than 50 days after his arrest, according to Mizan. His property was also confiscated.

Since the start of the conflict, Iran has intensified executions for alleged espionage or collaboration with Israel and the United States. But until now, those executed had been condemned for acts prior to the war.
