Between sea and ponds, Maguelone Cathedral will once again host one of the major events for early music in Occitania. For his 43e edition, the festival will highlight the reciprocal influences between popular music and great works of the European repertoire.
Among the highlights announced, Jordi Savall will return to the public on June 12 for the closing concert with the Hespèrion XXI ensemble. An international figure in early music and a faithful fan of the festival, the Catalan musician will offer a program devoted to the art of variation and improvisation, from Iberian traditions to music from the New World.
The festival will also pay tribute to Denis Raisin Dadre, founder of the Doulce Mémoire ensemble, who recently passed away. On June 6, the ensemble will perform Joy musica program of songs and dances from the French Renaissance carried by ancient instruments such as chalemies, bombardes and recorders.
Another new feature this year: a collaboration with the Théâtre Jérôme Savary in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone around a family show The Nightingale and the Emperorpresented by the La Rêveuse ensemble. Inspired by Andersen, this musical tale will combine shadow theater, puppets and ancient instruments in a universe centered on birdsong.
Like every year, the festival will alternate concerts, meetings and discoveries in the heritage setting of Maguelone, while leaving room for young European groups invited as part of the “The Muses and Emergence” program.
