The International Perfume Museum presents a new exhibition dedicated to traditional Asian olfactory cultures.

The International Perfume Museum (MIP) in Grasse, the world capital of perfume, announces its major exhibition for the year 2026, entitled “Perfumes of Asia – Traditional olfactory cultures from China to India”. This major cultural event offers a fascinating immersion into the heart of the traditions and uses of scents on the Asian continent, from Antiquity to the present day.

The opening of this exhibition will be held on Thursday June 25, 2026 at 7:00 p.m., in the presence of Jérôme Viaud, Mayor of Grasse and President of the Urban Community of Pays de Grasse, and Olivier Quiquempois, Director of the Grasse Museums and Chief Curator of the Heritage. The invitation promises a unique sensory and historical exploration, highlighting the fundamental place that perfume occupies in Asian civilizations.

A multifaceted sensory journey

The exhibition invites visitors on an olfactory journey that stretches from China to Japan, via the vast Indian world. Far from being a simple accessory of seduction, perfume in Asia takes on multiple and profound dimensions. It is first of all an essential link with the sacred, used in religious rituals, offerings to divinities and purification ceremonies to elevate the spirit.

The thematic route will also explore the medicinal uses of scents, anchored in ancestral knowledge where aromas are perceived as vectors of well-being and healing for the body and soul. At the same time, the exhibition will not obscure the pleasures of secular life : perfume as a marker of social status, as a refined art of living or as a tool of seduction. Finally, it will be presented as a true artistic expression, a subtle and complex composition in the same way as music or painting.

Precious materials and trade routes

At the heart of this journey, particular attention will be paid to the raw materials that make up these perfumes. A great diversity of substances, whether vegetable (flowers, resins, wood, spices) or animal, common or extremely preciousness, will be presented to the public. This section will help to understand not only the manufacturing secrets and traditional recipes, but also the economic importance of these ingredients.

The exhibition will highlight the ancient trade routes that allowed the movement of these precious materials across the continent and beyond. These exchanges not only shaped economies, but also encouraged intense cultural mixing, with scents traveling with people, ideas and beliefs.

An immersive scenography for a dialogue of cultures

To offer a complete experience, the scenography will be based on a rich collection of objects: perfume burners, old bottles, accessories and manuscripts revealing period recipes. One of the strong points of the exhibition will be its numerous sensory devices, which will allow visitors not only to see, but to smell and feel the fragrances evoked.

More than a simple historical panorama, “Parfums of Asia” aims to be a platform for dialogue between cultures. By presenting the forms and uses of perfume in Asia, the International Perfume Museum offers a reflection on the convergences and divergences with Western olfactory traditions, inviting a better mutual understanding through the universal language of scents.

The opening will take place at the International Perfume Museum, located at 2 boulevard du Jeu de Ballon in Grasse.
