Canada on Friday condemned the “serious mistreatment” of members of the Sumud global humanitarian flotilla en route to Gaza, calling for those responsible for these abuses to be held to account.
“I have just received information from my officials detailing the shocking abuses suffered by Canadians detained in Israel. These Canadians have now arrived in Türkiye,” Foreign Minister Anita Anand wrote on the American platform X.
“Global Affairs Canada consular officials on the ground are ensuring they receive the urgent medical care they need so they can return home as soon as possible,” she added.
“Canada unequivocally condemns the serious mistreatment of Canadians in Israel. Those responsible for these blatant abuses must be held accountable. We will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available,” she continued.
The Sumud global humanitarian flotilla announced Tuesday that all 50 ships in its convoy had been seized by Israel.
After their transfer to Türkiye from their detention in Israel, numerous testimonies from the detained activists, as well as a video published by an Israeli cabinet minister, documented multiple forms of mistreatment inflicted by their Israeli jailers.
The flotilla, carrying 428 people from 44 countries, left Marmaris, Turkiye, last Thursday in a new attempt to break the Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza since 2007, which has pushed the majority of the population to the brink of famine.
