In tune with the cultural life of its country, Spanish cinema has always reflected abundant creativity, expressing itself in all artistic fields. He confirms this again by unveiling three new short films during the 79e Cannes Film Festival, where Spain takes pride of place.
What do the series have in common? The Money Heist et The new yearsbut also the masterpieces of Pedro Almodóvar (Golden Lion in Venice in 2024), Carla Simón (Golden Bear in Berlin in 2022), Albert Serra (Golden Leopard in Locarno in 2013), Óliver Laxe, Alberto RodrÃguez, IcÃar BollaÃn or Isabel Coixet? All contribute to the international spread of Spanish culture… as well as to the redefinition of global imaginations. Also the renewed interest in the fantasy genre observed since the beginning of the 21stème century on the big screen owes a lot to directors from beyond the Pyrenees: Alejandro Amenábar (Open your eyes, The Others…), Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró ([REC]) ou Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) knew how to shape new forms of fear. And the same goes for the thriller, the comedy or the drama… Ambassadors of surrealism or Movida in the past, contemporary Iberian authors breathe a precious dynamic into current production, helped by stars whose aura goes beyond borders, like Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas, Sergi López, Carmen Maura and now à lvaro Morte or Antonio de la Torre.
From Cannes to the world
Moreover, the presence in force this year of the Spanish delegation on the Croisette testifies to the vigor of Iberian cinema. For the first time in fact, it has three films in the running for the Palme d’Or, directed by established or emerging filmmakers: Autofiction by Pedro Almodóvar, L’Être aimé of Rodrigo Sorogoyen as well as The black ball signed by the duo Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. A record to which must be added several other titles presented in different sections of the festival, confirming the vitality of the current Spanish audiovisual scene and the international influence of its talents.
