Indirect discussions between Tehran and Washington are progressing, but the main sticking point remains unchanged: the fate of the Iranian stock of enriched uranium. Behind this nuclear issue, a broader geopolitical recomposition is now emerging, where Beijing appears more and more as an essential diplomatic center, while American military priorities shift between the Middle East and Asia.
Why does enriched uranium still block negotiations?
According to Reuters, Iran’s supreme leader ordered that enriched uranium close to the military threshold should not leave Iranian territory. This position hardens the Iranian line in the face of one of the main American demands: transferring the most sensitive stocks out of Iran.
Donald Trump affirmed Thursday that Washington would not let Tehran keep these stocks, even mentioning their destruction after recovery. For its part, Iran believes that a transfer abroad would weaken its capacity to deter future American or Israeli strikes.
Avenues for compromise nevertheless remain mentioned, in particular a dilution of the stock under supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Are Pakistan and China becoming central players?
The Iranian agency ISNA affirms that exchanges of messages and draft texts are underway between the two camps in order to establish a formal framework of agreement. Al Jazeera, for its part, mentions intense Pakistani mediation.
But even beyond Pakistan, several signals show the growing weight of Beijing in major international balances. A few days after the visit of the head of Iranian diplomacy Abbas Araghchi, Vladimir Putin went to China to meet Xi Jinping, in a context where Moscow depends more and more economically and diplomatically on Beijing.
Even in its relationship with Moscow, Beijing, however, imposes its own tempo: according to Le Monde, Vladimir Putin did not obtain the firm commitment hoped for on the Siberian Force 2 gas pipeline, a sign that Xi Jinping is seeking to remain at the center of the game without letting himself be completely dragged along by his partners.
China thus appears to be a point of convergence between several major crises: Ukraine, Iran, energy and Sino-American rivalry.
Is the conflict with Iran already affecting the Taiwan issue?
Another important signal appeared on Thursday: Washington suspended certain arms sales to Taiwan in order to preserve its stocks of munitions mobilized in the context of the conflict in the Middle East.
This decision illustrates the growing interconnection of American geopolitical fronts. The Iranian issue is no longer limited to nuclear power: it now influences American military capabilities in Asia and fuels Beijing’s strategic calculations.
In this context, the negotiations with Tehran go far beyond the sole technical question of uranium enrichment. They become a broader test of the balance between Washington, Beijing and Moscow in an international order in full restructuring.
