This is a new duo in Breton musical culture: Régis Huiban (accordion) joins forces with Pierre Gateclou-Marest (clarinet) for a dance repertoire. “The idea of this training is to offer a register for fest-noz: gavottes, Vannese dances, waltzes and a bit of Gallo country… Traditional dances and original compositions.” Régis Huiban comes from the bal musette: “My parents enrolled me at the age of six in the Faouët fanfare. Three years later, I learned the chromatic accordion and the musette repertoire. Then Breton music that I discovered at high school.”
A fest-noz with 500 dancers
His friend, Pierre Gateclou-Marest, former bagpiper of the Bagad de Lann-Bihoué, is a clarinetist in several groups including the Kraaz quartet. He is also a teacher at the music school in Auray, Plouay and Locminé.
The two musicians played one of the duo’s very first concerts, last weekend, at the Fête de la Bretagne. The fest-noz was held in Paris, in the village hall of the 14th arrondissement in front of 500 dancers.
The duo will perform in Auray on June 29, with clarinet students from the music school for a discovery of the clarinet/accordion formula. And on August 9, he will be at the Taverne du Roi Morvan, as part of the Interceltic Festival.
