The emergency response protocols were immediately activated. The public agency managing LaGuardia Airport in New York announced last night that an aircraft, a CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation on behalf of Air Canada, collided with a Port Authority emergency and firefighting vehicle responding to another incident.
No official casualty figures have been given at this stage regarding potential victims. But according to NBC news network, there are four injuries, including the pilot and co-pilot, and two passengers from the vehicle involved in the accident. LaGuardia Airport in New York has been closed until further notice, according to airport authorities who have warned the public to expect cancellations, road closures, traffic delays, and the presence of emergency personnel near this major transport hub.
“Take alternative routes,” they recommended on X.
Many emergency vehicles on site
According to Jazz Aviation, the aircraft landed in New York after departing from Montreal with 72 passengers and four crew members on board. Photos from AFP show a damaged Air Canada Express plane at night on a runway, with the cockpit and front part extensively damaged. Based on these photos, numerous emergency vehicles also appeared to have been dispatched to the scene.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had announced the airport closure earlier due to an “emergency.” It specified that the likelihood of extending this measure was “high.” Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 also indicated that the aircraft collided with the emergency vehicle during landing. It was “taxiing on the runway when it struck” the vehicle crossing its path, according to FlightRadar24.
