Already rewarded in 2007 at the Élysée with the badge of officer of the Legion of Honor, by an admiring Nicolas Sarkozy, the singer was to receive a Palme d’Or of honor from Cannes. After Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings and actor John Travolta, the third Palme had been awarded to the star for his immense career, and was to be presented to him during the Closing Evening on Saturday May 23.
Unfortunately, the Festival was informed on May 17 that Barbra Streisand will not be able to attend the ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumiere in Cannes. “On the advice of my doctors, as I continue my recovery from a knee injuryunfortunately I cannot join the Cannes Film Festival this year.” announced Barbra Streisand. “I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme d’Or and looked forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition. The Cannes Film Festival has, however, decided to maintain the tribute planned to celebrate Barbra Streisand on Saturday May 23 and obviously wishes a speedy recovery to the actress.
