Dear reader,
Is war going to resume in Iran? While negotiations between Washington and Tehran are stuck, the Middle East is in a dangerous limbo. Since a fragile ceasefire two months ago, both the United States and Iran seem to want to avoid military confrontation. However, as the stalemate drags on, the threats of escalation multiply.
In this climate, the entire region is becoming more fragile. Last Sunday, the Wall Street Journal revealed Israel’s construction of a secret outpost in Iraq. The same journal reported that the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia had carried out direct strikes against Iran in the conflict. These events highlight the deepening regional fractures in a context of uncertainty and economic pressures.
The central question remains: how long can Iran withstand the American embargo? In this context, not only the stability of the Iranian regime but also the regional balance is at stake.
Until when will the situation between the United States and Iran remain sustainable? For a little over two months after the fragile ceasefire, both adversaries seem to avoid direct war. But as the deadlock continues, the rhetoric hardens. Could war resume as threats between Iran and the United States increase? Noura Doukhi analyzes the situation.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the UAE had carried out military operations against Iran in early April, despite only the US and Israel claiming to have participated in attacks against Tehran. The strikes targeted oil installations in Lavan Island, Iranian territory in the Gulf.
Despite the US and Israel’s war efforts, the Iranian regime shows surprising resilience. Anthropologist Sepideh Parsapajouh of the National Center for Scientific Research in Iran discusses the regime’s stability and political-religious changes amidst the war.
According to the Wall Street Journal, just before the war began, Israel set up a secret military outpost in the Iraqi desert to support its air campaign against Iran. The installation housed special forces and served as a logistics center for the Israeli air force, with US knowledge.
Facing the maritime blockade imposed by Washington on Iranian ports since April 13, Tehran shows signs of impatience. Despite economic pressure, Iran intends to resist at the expense of its population. Laure-Maïssa Farjallah provides an analysis.
The outcome of the war between the US and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, is still uncertain. Omar Kaddour also questions why the war and post-war issues are not adequately addressed in public debates among the Middle East populations.
Saudi Arabia reportedly carried out several strikes against Iran in late March, according to Reuters, citing Western officials and Iranian sources. The attacks were in retaliation for actions during the Middle East war, although Saudi Arabia did not claim responsibility.
