We are pleased to welcome Louisa Yousfi for a discussion around her first novel La grande méthode, published by La Fabrique. Journalist and writer, she was a resident of the Villa Medici (2024-2025) and is also the author of Rester barbare (La factory, 2022).
A word from the editor:
This book tells the story of the journey of an Algerian immigrant family who left to bury their father in the country. This crossing is the occasion of an intimate crisis but also of mystical visions where ghosts, returns to Palestine and phantasmagorical birds mingle.
The author of Remaining Barbarian sets out to capture the lives of the colonized and their descendants as a metaphysical adventure. If moderns no longer know how to hear marvelous stories, and even less take them seriously, it is perhaps one of the powers of literature to bring invisible worlds back to life. Abandoned both by a religiosity increasingly clinging to a fantasized orthodoxy and by a disenchanted secularism, post-colonized imaginations have been placed in the closet of superstitions and colorful folklore.
Louisa Yousfi works here on the commonality between the literary space and the hieratic arts: accepting the disproportion between the instrument and its product, refusing the tyranny of causal links in favor of the threads of meaning and their power of influence, bringing into the microcosm of an object, a trace, a work, the immensity of the macrocosm.
