BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana voters are heading to June runoffs in both the Republican and Democratic primaries for the U.S. Senate after Saturday’s statewide election under the state’s new closed primary system.
On the Republican side, Julia Letlow finished first with over 40% of the vote. John Fleming secured the second spot, pushing incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy out of the runoff, according to unofficial results. Cassidy acknowledged defeat during a speech to supporters in Baton Rouge on Saturday night.
For Democrats, Jamie Davis is leading to advance to the runoff. The second runoff spot was too close to call as of 11 p.m. Saturday, with Nick Albares and Gary Crockett each receiving about 26% of the vote and fewer than 400 votes separating them.
Under Louisiana’s new closed primary system, voters voted within their registered party. The winners from both parties in June will advance to a November general election, which might also feature independent candidates.
Saturday’s ballot included five proposed constitutional amendments, all of which failed, including one linked to teacher salary increases and the proposed establishment of a new school district for St. George in East Baton Rouge Parish.
