Paris-Saint-Germain Promises Exceptional Security Measures for Champions League Final
As Paris-Saint-Germain prepares for their second consecutive European Cup final, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has promised an “exceptional” security setup to prevent the chaos that followed the team’s historic victory last year, which led to over 600 arrests.
Will history repeat itself? On May 30, Paris-Saint-Germain will defend their title in the Champions League final. Following the disturbances that marred the Parisians’ victory last year, especially on the streets of the capital, the Interior Minister is bracing for a similar level of violence in this new final against Luis Enrique’s team versus Arsenal.
“Last year, after PSG won, there were many scenes of unrest. The streets were disrupted, shops were looted… We expect the same level of violence,” said Laurent Nuñez in an interview with La Tribune Dimanche. While fans will undoubtedly take to the streets if PSG secures a second consecutive victory, the Interior Minister has already planned an “exceptional” security operation.
5,400 police officers and gendarmes were mobilized in 2025
Surprisingly, law enforcement were overwhelmed in 2025 despite a significant presence on the ground. To tackle the disturbances after the previous European Cup final where the blue and red team triumphed 5-0 against Inter Milan in Munich, 5,400 police officers and gendarmes were deployed across the Paris area. Despite the massive operation, it failed to contain the multiple acts of incivility.
Amidst looting and public disorder, 563 arrests were made on the night of the victory, with 491 in Paris alone. Another 79 people were arrested the following night, with 307 individuals placed in custody. Former Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez, now the new Interior Minister, aims to strengthen security measures this year to prevent a repeat of such incidents and avoid spoiling a potential second PSG victory.
