The Israeli army announced on Saturday May 16 that it had launched new strikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. “Israeli Defense Forces have started hitting Hezbollah infrastructure in several areas of southern Lebanon”affirmed the army in a press release. These strikes on the devastated South continue despite the announcement Friday evening of the extension, for 45 days, of a truce that came into force on April 17 between the two countries, and which was due to expire on Sunday.

The Lebanese National Information Agency, ANI, reported strikes on several villages, preceded by an exodus of residents towards Saida, the region’s major city, and Beirut. The Israeli army had previously ordered residents of nine villages to evacuate.

Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed more than 400 people since the start of the ceasefire a month ago, according to an AFP count based on official figures. On Friday, six people were killed, including three rescuers from the Islamic Health Committee, affiliated with the pro-Iranian movement, according to the Health Ministry.
