The conflict between Iran and the United States with Israel has a very negative impact on Iraq. Indeed, its economy is largely based on the export of oil, disrupted by the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz since the end of February. As reported by Les Échos, the new Iraqi Minister of Oil announced on Saturday April 16 that the country’s exports of black gold had been divided by ten in April compared to the months before the war : “Iraq used to export 93 million barrels per month through the Strait of Hormuz, but in April we only exported 10 million, because of the war.”

This founding member of OPEC, the alliance of oil exporting countries, nevertheless hopes that recent discussions with the United States and Iran will make it possible to unblock a passage route through the Strait of Hormuz. It must be said that Baghdad is dependent on this passage for its oil exportshaving only one oil pipeline in the north of the country which “is not connected to the infrastructure of the South”according to Homayoun Falakshahi, analyst at Kpler. The rest is usually done by sea.

Exports by road

Iraq is therefore forced to limit its oil production, for lack of a place to store its barrels. As stocks can no longer be sold by sea, they are sold by road. Of the tank trucks take the road towards Syriabut this is much less effective and much more expensive. It must be said that before the war, Iraq exported nearly 3.5 million barrels per dayconstituting almost 90% of state budget revenue.
