On Poster! – Cannes Film Festival 2026: a committed opening between glamor and popular cinema

The Cannes Film Festival officially launched its 79th edition with an opening ceremony featuring a red carpet, engaging speeches and a celebration of popular cinema. Presented by the Franco-Malian actress Eye Haïdara, the evening was marked by the appearances of Jane Fonda and Gong Li, who came to remind us of the power of cinema in a world crossed by crises and political tensions.

In this special issue of “À l’Affiche” live from the Croisette, Louise Dupont looks back on the highlights of this opening with our cinema columnist Albéric de Gouville: the Honorary Palme d’Or awarded to Peter Jackson by Elijah Wood, the atmosphere of the first climbs of the stairs and the main trends of this 2026 edition.

Focus also on “The Electric Venus” by Pierre Salvadori, the opening film directed by Anaïs Demoustier, Pio Marmaï and Gilles Lellouche, as well as on the stars expected this year at Cannes, from Scarlett Johansson to John Travolta, who came to present his very first film as a director.
