The Kremlin judged it premature on Tuesday to discuss the “concrete details” of the process leading to peace between Russia and Ukraine, after the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin who spoke on Saturday of an imminent “end” to the war.

“All the achievements in terms of the peace process allow us to say that the end is truly approaching. But, in this context, it is not possible for the moment to go into concrete details,” indicated the spokesperson for the Russian presidency Dmitri Peskov during his daily briefing.

He was questioned about the remarks made on Saturday by President Vladimir Putin who surprised by affirming that the conflict in Ukraine was “coming to an end” during a press conference on the day of celebrations of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

The Russian leader did not elaborate on this comment accompanied by criticism of Western support for Kyiv.

“The president said that Russia remains open to contact and that work has been done in a trilateral format. He said he will welcome subsequent efforts from the United States,” Peskov said.

Negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv under American mediation have been on hold since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East at the end of February.

Carney says he is “concerned” by a “possible adjustment of American military personnel” A “possible adjustment of American military personnel” is “a subject of interest and concern,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters in Yerevan, where a meeting of the European Political Community is currently taking place.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday a three-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, which the two belligerents mutually accused each other of having violated.

Moscow said it had resumed its offensive after the end of this truce which expired at midnight local time on Tuesday.

“It can stop at any time as soon as the Kyiv regime assumes its responsibilities and makes the necessary decision,” said Mr. Peskov, affirming that Kyiv “knows very well what the necessary decisions are.”

Russian power is demanding territorial concessions from the Ukrainian government, in particular a complete withdrawal from the eastern region of Donbass, partially controlled by Moscow. Demands rejected by Kyiv, assimilating them to capitulation.

The large-scale offensive launched in February 2022 left hundreds of thousands dead, becoming the worst conflict in Europe since the Second World War.
