The American midfielder for Atletico Madrid, Johnny Cardoso, is likely to miss the World Cup after injuring his ankle.
Atletico Madrid announced on Monday that the 24-year-old midfielder will need surgery after suffering a serious sprain to his right ankle, most likely ruling him out of the World Cup.
Cardoso, who has 23 caps for the US national team, was injured in training last Thursday and the club did not specify the length of his absence.
It is almost certain that the New Jersey native, who has played 15 La Liga matches this season with Atletico (12 as a starter), will not be able to compete in the World Cup which kicks off in exactly one month (June 11 – July 19) in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“Johnny,” whose real name is Joao Lucas de Souza Cardoso, will have to undergo surgery to address the injury in his right ankle, according to the club, which wishes him “a prompt and full recovery.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s players will start the competition on June 12 against Paraguay in Los Angeles (Group D).
