How about a little family movie session for this Mother’s Day Sunday? We’ve put together a list of the best to watch for the occasion.
Chocolat
How not to think from the outset Chocolat (2000), with Juliette Binoche in the role of a rather unconventional mother. This modern tale, which revolves around homemade chocolate, goes well beyond a simple romantic story. Behind the careful (and chocolate) staging, a dream cast (which includes a young and ardent Johnny Depp) hides a message of freedom, tolerance and humanity.
The Wild Robot
The Wild Robot (2024), animated film by DreamWorksseems at first glance to be like many other films of the same genre. However, it turns out to be much deeper, beautifully tackling the theme of maternal love. Tip: have your tissues handy!
The Life List
The Life List (2025), or Tomorrow will come a new skyin French, tells the moving story of a mother who writes a list of things for her daughter to accomplish before leaving this world. The young woman discovers, thanks to this approach, family secrets, love and a new version of herself. A true coming-of-age novel as touching as it is funny on the small screen (that of Netflix, in this case).
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
In Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025), or the last part of the famous saga of the 2000s, now back on our screens, Bridget appears more than ever as an imperfect, clumsy and overwhelmed mother, true to herself.
Having become a widow and a single mother, she tries as best she can to maintain a family balance in the midst of the chaos of her daily life. Her children grow up in a world far from the classic family model, punctuated by the unexpected, humor and romantic encounters (sometimes questionable) of their mother. Behind its light tone, the film tells with tenderness the mourning of a family after the loss of a husband and a father. Between moving scenes and frankly funny moments, he manages to bring sadness and lightness together.
Oh mama!
Impossible to make a list of films for Mother’s Day without mentioning Oh mama! (2008), it would be a crime. A great classic that has lost none of its charm. The mother-daughter relationship is particularly touching, and the soundtrack is timeless! (sim/dag)
