Saturday May 2, fashion show by Créa & Boutique, Saintes, before the screening of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” S. J.
On stage, Amélie Degenne is moved. For several days, the one who serves as administrative and reception agent, has been rehearsing with the models of Caroline Hot, dress designer and milliner at Créa & Boutique. The next day, Sunday May 3, it is the horse Peyo and his rider Hassen Bouchakour who accompany the screening of the documentary on the end of life, “Tomorrow on the Moon”. The events follow one another to the rhythm of the projections.
Coyote Minute, ciné plein air
This Sunday, May 10, the Atlantic Ciné team will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its opening in the Parc des Coteaux. Behind the birth of Atlantic Ciné, is Daniel Taillandier, then boss of the neighboring E.Leclerc and operator of the Olympia cinema, avenue Gambetta, from 2004 to September 2007. Without it being planned at that time, this cinema enthusiast will lay the first stone of the Ciné West building which was not content to remain in the west of France. The group made trips to the east, settling in Nevers (Nièvre) and Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes). Today, the group has 13 cinemas (86 screens) in France, including those in Cognac and Royan, where the headquarters are located.
A whole series of highlights will mark the coming weeks, including the arrival of Coyote Minute. The Saint company will play “La Metro Goldwin Mayer” (1) on Sunday May 31. For its 20th anniversary, the Atlantic Cinema will take to the air this summer with a screening of “Marsupilami”, on the site of the former Saint-Louis hospital. The film will be offered with a little best-of film DIY as a fun aperitif.
Laser projectors
At its beginnings, the Saintais complex had seven rooms. It increased to eight in 2014 at the same time as a reception room was created for the directors and actors present at the premieres. This year 2026 marks the end of the deployment of laser projectors in the eight rooms. That is 500,000 euros for “a more stable image” and a “more energy-efficient” projection, describes Mehdi Kihel, director for sixteen years. Every year, the establishment invests to improve “the cinema experience” but also its environment: “We changed all the toilets. It was a negative point.”
Conductor of the programming, he works a grid between commercial evidence and favorites. He thus has the freedom to offer committed films like “Muganga – the one who heals” or “The Wave”, as much time as he wants. “I want to give the Saintais the opportunity to see films.” Without forgetting the documentaries which pique his curiosity like “Compost me” which he programmed on a suggestion from the association Ensemble Around Death.
Arts and essays
It should also be remembered that for twenty years, a tacit agreement has linked the Gallia cinema, oriented towards arts and essays, in the city center, and the large complex on the outskirts. “The programs are discussed together. The Almodovars, for example, come out first at the Gallia cinema and then come to us,” explains the director. And so go the adjustments for the films that both cultural establishments are eyeing. “In practice, this has a real interest for the Saintais,” is convinced Mehdi Kihel.
At the level of the Cinéwest group, same line of conduct. “Where there is arthouse, we don’t encroach,” recalls Daniel Taillandier. “In cities where we are all alone, we program arthouse cinema. This is the case for nine of our thirteen cinemas. In France, it’s 20% of entries”
