Alex Beaupain is often associated with other musicians. He collaborated with Alex Beaupain for a record, classical soprano Sabine Devielhe matched her voice with his synthesizers, he has worked with rappers like Nekfeu, but this inquiring head is also an artist who produces music solo. For eleven years, he has released several records, recently performing at the Salle Pleyel in Paris and releasing a new work, “Le disque de ma mère.” The album features old songs written by his mother, Valérie Lefevre, sung by Blandine Rinkel and set to music by the electronic composer.

His guest is the director and actress Jeanne Desoubeaux. Those who enjoy itinerant opera could appreciate “Carmen,” created by the Maurice et les autres company founded by Desoubeaux eleven years ago. She directed this rendition of Carmen herself.

Music

S: Listening to this track, “Obsession,” gives me pleasure; it synthesizes everything I have been trying to do for the past decade with my deep love for all the diverse music and worlds that we immerse ourselves in. I listen to a lot of music; I am an audiophile before being a musician, and in my records, I try to convey this passion.

People describe my music as neo-classical, but I’m not sure: I had a classical training that I quickly abandoned; I don’t compartmentalize my listening by genres. I am interested in the emotions that music evokes. Nowadays, music is much more layered, and that is a wonderful thing.

JD: When I listen to Superpoze’s music, I feel emotions; I’m not used to this kind of music. It is something that contributes to my artistic practice today. We met in Caen at the secondary school, lost touch, and reconnected six years ago. We became friends again. I had commissioned him to compose music for a 19th-century opera.

S: All my albums have been composed with many people. I have a collaborative approach to music. I listened to a lot of adolescent rap, and I still do today. I ventured into electronic music through composers who made rap beats without vocals, like the artists on the Ninja Tune label at the end of the 2000s. Rap music has always been with me.

Jeanne Desoubeaux’s activities currently:

The family-friendly show “Avec les pieds” (text by Nicole Genovese) will be on tour, including dates in Choisy-le-Roi, Lyon, and Paris.

The outdoor opera “Carmen” will also be on tour this summer, with performances in Noisy-le-Grand, Bretigny-sur-Orge, Paris, and Angers.

Jeanne Desoubeaux’s Cultural Recommendation:

The album “Extasia” by Ino Casablanca. It is a huge favorite; it creates something physical. He writes very well; I like his calmness, the distance he maintains in his storytelling.

Superpoze’s Cultural Recommendation:

The album “Autechre Guitar” by Shane Parish. An American guitarist covers the repertoire of the British duo Autechre, creating a connection between different styles.
