The Supreme Leader of Iran Dictates Law on Control of Strait of Hormuz
- The supreme Iranian guide has dictated a bill regarding the control of the Strait of Hormuz.
- Strict restrictions would apply to authorized ships passing through.
- An announcement comes in the midst of a potential new phase of negotiations.
For over two months, tensions have been high in the Strait of Hormuz. As negotiations with the United States may restart, Iran has decided to impose a law concerning the control of this strategic passage, with harsh conditions imposed on enemy vessels.
The supreme Iranian leader speaks of a new legal framework to remain in total control. The plan highlights three main points of control. Firstly, Israeli ships or those linked to Israel will never be allowed to pass. Secondly, ships from hostile countries, particularly the United States, will be required to pay war reparations to obtain a passage permit.
Lastly, all other ships, whether enemies or allies, will have to pay a toll to Iran to cross the strait. However, the situation remains delicate as the width of the Strait of Hormuz complicates the applicable law and legal framework.
