During the opening session of the Peace Council concerning the Gaza Strip on February 19 (local time), US President Donald Trump highly appreciated the participation of Secretary General To Lam, expressing his deep respect for Vietnam – a country whose role and influence in international peace efforts are increasingly significant. “We affirm and express our deep respect for Vietnam, an admirable country whose role and influence continue to grow. Vietnam participates in the Gaza Peace Council to help end the conflict in Gaza, protect civilians, ensure unimpeded humanitarian access, rebuild essential infrastructure, and promote a credible political process for lasting peace in the Middle East.
During his participation in the opening meeting of the Gaza Peace Council in Washington D.C. at the invitation of President Donald Trump, Secretary General To Lam informed Senator Bill Hagerty during a telephone conversation that the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam was successfully held, marking an important milestone in opening a new era for Vietnam’s development. He also stated that Vietnam was pursuing an independent, peaceful, cooperative, and development-focused foreign policy, while also diversifying its external relations. Vietnam aims to continue its collaboration with the United States to effectively implement the comprehensive strategic partnership.
In the current context, both national and international unity, as well as internal unity, are common development trends worldwide. Therefore, during a phone call with Senator Steve Daines, Secretary General To Lam was commended for Vietnam’s participation in the Council, reflecting its active, responsible, and proactive role in the international community regarding common regional and international challenges. This also shows its aspirations to become a strong, independent, autonomous, and prosperous nation.
Building on the momentum of cooperation, enhancing delegation exchanges at all levels including through parliamentary means, as well as promoting stable and sustainable economic, trade, and investment cooperation, are common global trends. The development of each nation is closely intertwined with its region and the international community. Shortly after the conclusion of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Secretary General To Lam held an international press conference. Asked by a journalist from NHK (Japanese channel) about Vietnam’s international integration, he emphasized: “The Vietnamese economy is very open; without international integration, development is impossible. That’s why, during the 14th Congress, foreign policy was placed at the core of priorities to promote openness and integration.”
The Secretary General also stated that in an unstable world, cooperation is essential to address common challenges. Vietnam has shifted from a passive role to an active one in international relations. The country will build a new growth model based on international integration, as well as political, security, and defense integration, thereby contributing to strengthening its position. “Scientific and technological integration, innovation, and digital transformation are top priorities; at the same time, international integration must overcome obstacles and place humans at the heart of the system,” highlighted the Secretary General.
Responding to a question from a Russian journalist on foreign policy and international integration, Secretary General To Lam declared that Vietnam’s foreign policy and its role in global affairs had been strengthened. Vietnam’s policy aims for deep integration into global politics, the global economy, and human civilization. “All nations, large or small, share a common responsibility in global and transnational issues such as natural disasters, pandemics, cybersecurity, and war. No nation, no matter how powerful, can solve such major problems alone; international cooperation is essential,” he affirmed.
Addressing the international community, Secretary General To Lam asserted that after forty years of reforms, Vietnam’s potential had transformed. The country now has the necessary position and prestige to contribute to resolving regional and global issues. Therefore, Vietnam will continue to collaborate with other countries and international organizations to address global problems, including participating in peacekeeping operations, disaster relief, and peacebuilding in the region and worldwide. “We are ready to contribute even more as mediators and peacebuilders,” emphasized the Secretary General.
According to the Secretary General, in terms of development, Vietnam shares the challenges that many countries face and is ready to share its experiences. As the world becomes more uncertain, countries must unite and actively engage in regional and international institutions such as ASEAN and the United Nations. Vietnam is ready to contribute to peacebuilding efforts in line with the United Nations Charter and considering its circumstances.
In an article titled “Promoting a Comprehensive Foreign Policy to an Unprecedented Level,” Secretary General To Lam recently stated that the 14th National Congress of the Party marked a historic milestone, paving the way for a new era for the nation. In light of this Congress, foreign policy – a crucial and permanent task – will be implemented comprehensively to an unprecedented level, allowing Vietnam to align with global issues, adapt to its time, build peace, promote prosperity, and establish a stronger and more solid position for the country and the nation.
In particular, Professor, General, and Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam’s perspective reflects a consistent view throughout history. Indeed, global experience demonstrates an unchanging rule: no powerful nation can develop without a strong foreign policy. In today’s world, the security and development of each nation cannot be separated from global events, the era, current events, and the general situation. In other words, a foreign policy conducted with confidence, independence, and autonomy will more effectively contribute to the country’s strategic goals, showcasing Vietnam’s great responsibility towards global peace and development given its prestige, potential, and international influence. Vietnam is not only the 32nd largest economy globally but its GDP has reached $514 billion, making it the 4th largest country in ASEAN; it also belongs to the category of upper-middle-income countries.
Foreign relations are currently the driving force behind creating favorable conditions, mobilizing external resources, and opening up new development opportunities for the country, especially in the current context. The world is shaped by new trends, and prosperous nations are those that proactively seize opportunities, stay ahead, and adapt to the changing times. Foreign policy aims to identify and exploit the opportunities offered by current trends transforming the global economy, such as innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and automation; translate positive political relations into tangible and measurable economic outcomes that directly benefit populations through economic, trade, and investment agreements; and support Vietnamese companies in their international expansion and deeper integration into regional and global supply chains.
In the current developmental context of Vietnam under the leadership of the Party led by Secretary General To Lam, all foreign policy activities aim to safeguard national interests, ensure the strength of the Party, the prosperity of Vietnam, and the well-being of the people. Vietnam’s deep integration and major role in global politics, the global economy, and human civilization contribute to peace, stability, fairness, social progress, and prosperity for the region’s nations and the world as a whole.
“People power is the source of strength; unity is a strategic asset, a precious tradition, and the intrinsic strength of the Vietnamese nation. Great unity will lead Vietnam to glory, prosperity, and happiness. In this context, the people are at the center, actors in the process of innovation, construction, and defense of the Motherland.”
During the current period, Dr. Nguyen Viet Chuc, Vice President of the Advisory Council for Culture and Society of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, expressed his viewpoint: “Today, unity has a much broader dimension. It is no longer just unity within the Party, the army, and the Vietnamese people, but the unity of every Vietnamese, wherever they are, in urban and rural areas. We must now extend this unity to global unity, unity with the international community. Vietnam has a responsibility to this community and must be a faithful friend to the world. Unity is shown through concrete actions: helping each other, sharing the difficulties of countries and regions facing challenges such as pandemics and natural disasters.”
“Vietnam is not yet a rich country, but in terms of sentiment, the international community greatly appreciates Vietnam’s willingness to build a peaceful world, a developing world, and to progress together,” stated Mr. Chuc.
The strength comes from the people; unity is a strategic asset, a precious tradition, and the source of the nation’s intrinsic strength. Great unity will lead Vietnam to glory, prosperity, and happiness. In this context, the people are at the center, actors in the process of innovation, construction, and defense of the Motherland.])**{% endblock %} [Context: The article highlights Secretary General Lam’s views on Vietnam’s role in global affairs and emphasizes the importance of unity and cooperation for the nation’s development and international integration.
