The esplanade of La Défense will become more lively. This is the wish of the public group Paris La Défense, which launched a call for projects on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, to set up a “placemaking” device at the foot of the Grande Arche. In other words, an actor will be in charge of creating a place for “meetings” and “activities” for a period of three years. Here are the main outlines of the project.
“Paris La Défense is methodically pursuing the transformation of the historic axis that connects the Louvre to the Grande Arche,” explains the group. The challenge for the developer is both simple and significant: what to do with this gigantic esplanade of 1.3 hectares?
“The objective of this consultation is to bring this unique place to life on the scale of Greater Paris, by selecting a designer-operator capable of making it an attractive and comfortable destination,” specifies Paris La Défense. “The consultation aims to make this site easily identifiable and accessible to everyone, in order to make it a real hub of life.”
At this stage, it is difficult to know who could invest in the esplanade. However, some parameters will have to be respected by the future “facilitator,” such as the “creation of convivial and relaxing spaces, as well as shaded and landscaped areas,” and “the installation of furniture adapted to different times of the day, consistent with the surrounding urban environment and promoting encounters.”
“The goal is to demonstrate that it is possible to reconcile attractiveness, quality of life, and environmental sobriety in such a constrained urban space.”
Note that the consultation also includes an event dimension. “Sports activities, afterwork gatherings, family-oriented events, and weekend programming should be proposed,” concludes Paris La Défense.
