The tension continues to escalate between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. After threatening to withdraw some American troops stationed in Germany, the US Department of Defense has followed through on the threat. During a statement on the evening of Friday, May 1st, Sean Parnell, spokesperson for US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, announced the departure of nearly 5,000 American soldiers out of the more than 36,000 currently stationed in Germany. The withdrawal is expected to take place over “six to twelve months,” as reported by S üddeutsche Zeitung.
According to the Bavarian daily newspaper, the White House occupant clearly took the conservative chancellor’s comments as a “personal attack.” Merz had previously stated before students in North Rhine-Westphalia that the Islamic Republic of Iran was “humiliating” Americans during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Even though the “official reason cited is a reevaluation of the American military presence in Europe, conditions on the ground, and overall needs of operational areas,” as highlighted by Die Welt, the German press is drawing a connection between Merz’s recent statements and the situation.
