Josiane Balasko, known for her iconic roles and directing talents, is currently sharing the stage of the play “That’s Love” at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens with her daughter. Invited by Mouloud Achour on Wednesday, April 29, she took the opportunity to pay tribute to Claude Berri, the man who notably funded the global success “French Twist.” While she holds a deep affection for him, describing him as a great lover of cinema who “was ready to do anything to produce a film he believed in,” she also acknowledges their disagreements. According to her, the producer had a strong temperament that often led to heated discussions.

The breaking point between the two collaborators occurred during the project of the film “Client.” This film depicted Nathalie Baye as a woman seeking the services of sex workers. Claude Berri categorically refused to produce this bold scenario, leading to a conflict with Balasko. Despite this clash, the actress does not harbor any bitterness towards him today. She prefers to remember his professionalism and dedication to the works he firmly believed in.

Josiane Balasko paid a touching tribute to Claude Berri, calling him “a true producer.” She believes that today, cinema is mainly produced by people who come from business schools, emphasizing Berri’s instinctual approach to production. Their unique bond left a mark on the history of the César Awards in 2000 during a memorable moment when she kissed Claude Berri on the mouth while receiving an honorary award. When asked about this spontaneous gesture, Balasko admitted that she enjoyed breaking conventions and cherished working with a demanding man like Berri, despite the challenges.
