In a recent interview with the newspaper L’Équipe, French basketball international Evan Fournier, 33, announced his plan to retire in 2028 after completing his contract with his Greek club Olympiacos and a final campaign with the French team at the Los Angeles Olympics.
“I think I will finish this contract and retire,” said Fournier, from Charenton, Val-de-Marne. “I won’t go further. It’s not completely decided, but that’s the idea. I struggle more with little things that remind me.”
Fournier expressed his desire to spend time with his family, especially his two children, travel with his wife, and enjoy life beyond basketball. He mentioned that he had previously considered retiring after the Paris Olympics, but the urge to play led him to Greece for one last run.
This decision resolves the question of Fournier’s future with the French national team. Despite rumors that he had played his last game in the 2024 Paris Games final, he confirmed he would compete in future international events and aim for the 2027 World Cup if France qualifies.
“Yes, it’s categorical. Well, I’ll come… if they call me,” Fournier joked, mentioning a recent meeting with national team coach Frédéric Fauthoux.
As a double Olympic silver medalist, Fournier is now chasing a third Olympic medal before retiring. This achievement would further solidify his place in the history of French basketball team.
