US President Donald Trump has stated that Israel is working with Washington to ensure the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route currently threatened by Iran’s actions. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Donald Trump indicated that the United States is in discussions with about seven countries to establish a coalition tasked with protecting this essential corridor for global oil and gas transportation.
The American president called on countries benefiting from this maritime route to actively participate in its security. According to him, these countries must take responsibility for protecting the strait themselves. Donald Trump emphasized that China heavily relies on this maritime route for its energy supplies, stating that over 90% of its oil transits through there, while the United States derive only a small portion of it from their own resources.
The American leader, however, refused to say whether Beijing will join the upcoming coalition, simply stating that it would be desirable for other countries to participate in surveillance of the area alongside the United States. Additionally, Donald Trump mentioned that Washington is maintaining contacts with Tehran, while expressing skepticism about the willingness of Iranian authorities to engage in genuine negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. According to him, Iran does not appear, at this stage, to be willing to engage in serious discussions.
