The decision of the American Ministry of the Interior is part of the Trump administration’s energy policy, which is strongly focused on fossil fuels.

The American Ministry of the Interior announced on Monday the abandonment of two major offshore wind projects, which involved the French company Engie, as part of the Trump government’s energy policy focused on fossil fuels. The first affected project is Bluepoint Wind, which was supposed to be located off the coasts of New Jersey and New York, and power about a million homes.

The consortium formed around Bluepoint Wind includes French Engie, Portuguese EDP Renewables, and the American investment company Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a subsidiary of BlackRock. The Ministry also mentioned the end of another significant offshore wind program, Golden State Wind, off the Californian coasts between Monterey and Santa Barbara, which was expected to provide electricity to about 1.1 million households.

Engie and EDP Renewables were also part of this consortium through their joint venture Ocean Winds, associated with investment company Reventus Power, a financial arm in offshore wind of the Canadian pension fund CPPIB. This decision is another example of the American government’s policy, which is openly opposed to the development of new offshore wind capacity in the United States.

Context: The American government under the Trump administration is shifting its focus towards fossil fuels and away from renewable energy sources like offshore wind.

Fact Check: Engie and EDP Renewables were involved in two abandoned offshore wind projects under the Trump administration, which signifies the government’s preference for fossil fuel energy.
