Just a few days before the second round of municipal elections where he faced the incumbent mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc in Toulouse, the rebellious candidate François Piquemal had to confront a violent incident during a ceremony commemorating the 14th anniversary of the assassination of a teacher and three children from the Ozar-Hatorah Jewish school by Mohammed Merah.

Amid allegations of antisemitism towards France Insoumise, the National Union of Journalists (SNJ) presented a different perspective on Tuesday, April 22. They revealed that a key member of the Jewish community in Toulouse had warned the editorial team in advance about potential disturbances during the tribute, emphasizing the need for camera presence.

The SNJ denounced a lack of information and a distorted presentation of the facts, criticizing the manipulation of journalists’ duty to provide complete and verified information. These revelations sparked reactions among the rebellious supporters, despite the candidate’s defeat in the second round to the right-wing alliance with the Socialist list.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the founder of the movement, criticized what he called a pre-planned operation in collaboration with France Télévisions’ editorial team to influence the outcome against the Insoumis and François Piquemal. He demanded explanations, sanctions, and public apologies from France Télévisions, which has remained silent so far.

François Piquemal expressed his outrage at the supposed political trap revealed by the SNJ, highlighting the insults and threats faced during the ceremony. He filed a complaint and hopes for swift progress from the justice system. The aim is not only to address the incident but also to challenge foreign digital interference leading to a legal challenge to annul the election results.
