Last week, a scandal resurfaced when The Guardian revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs granted security clearance to Peter Mandelson for his position in January 2025 despite a negative feedback on his background check.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed new calls for resignation in Parliament, stating that nothing will deter him from serving the country. This comes as Starmer faces criticism over appointing Peter Mandelson as the US ambassador, a decision which was later reversed in September due to alleged misleading information.

Former Foreign Office official Olly Robbins, who was fired by Starmer after the revelations, testified about the pressure from Downing Street during Mandelson’s appointment. Despite this, Starmer claimed that Robbins’ testimony exonerated him of any wrongdoing. However, he was criticized for allegedly misleading Parliament about following all necessary procedures during Mandelson’s vetting process.

Reports have also raised concerns about Mandelson’s ties with China through his consultancy firm, as well as his connections to Russia through his involvement with Kremlin-linked defense company Systema. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch questioned Starmer’s decision to appoint someone with ties to the Kremlin as the US ambassador.
