The war between the United States, Israel, and Iran has resulted in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Whether Iranian, American, or both, this blockade prevents all boats from passing through the strait. Those who were there at the beginning of the war are still trapped, and the sailors on board are calling for help.
It has now been two months since the Strait of Hormuz has been blocked due to the war in the Middle East. The blockade was initially Iranian, then American. Today, both enemies are blocking all boats. It is impossible to enter or exit the strait without risking a bombing. This naval war is affecting the sailors who were in the Strait of Hormuz before the start of the war. Two thousand ships and twenty thousand sailors are said to still be blocked. One of them called for help on RTL.
“We have seen numerous missiles, explosions, many incidents,” explains the Indian captain to our colleagues. He fears “a possible escalation” and says that “the crew is still worried about their safety,” adding that “the sailors want to go home.”
The UN calls for action
“We are not prepared for war,” continues the man. “We are just innocent sailors, seamen.” The sailors fear for their safety and plead: “Please do not harm us, we are innocent.”
Facing a situation that has been worsening for two months, the head of the UN maritime agency called for action on Tuesday, April 21. The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization specified that some countries had already intervened for their crews, providing them with assistance telephone lines and food. The crews hope to have access to the Internet to contact their families.
