In Chaumont, parking is a headache on Avenue des États

On weekdays, more than half of the parking spaces are occupied by student gendarmes. Residents, clinic patients, and hospital patients share the remaining spaces. Finding a spot on Avenue des Etats-Unis is a real challenge. Residents, patients, and healthcare workers all compete for a spot on this constantly busy thoroughfare, squeezed between three major institutions – the hospital, the Chaumont-Le-Bois medical-surgical center, and the gendarmerie school. This situation persists regardless of the time of day. On weekends, the contrast is stark as the avenue empties out, nearly deserted. Why such a difference?

A local resident explains that “more than half of the spaces are taken by student gendarmes. Their vehicles occupy the same spots all week long. On Friday afternoons, they head home and finally free up space. By Sunday evening, Avenue des Etats-Unis and Avenue 109th Infantry Regiment fill up again.” During the week, residents and clinic/hospital patients share the few remaining spots. A resident admits having to resort to the French Blood Establishment parking lot several times due to lack of space.

Despite efforts to reserve parking spaces for student gendarmes at Voltaire parking during the 109th Infantry Regiment Avenue works, there are reports that these spaces are underutilized. Authorities plan to meet with a representative from the Gendarmerie School to address this issue.

The parking shortage is not just due to the number of vehicles; some drivers intentionally or unintentionally park in a way that limits space and blocks neighboring spots. This frustration is shared among all residents, with no easy solution in sight.

The visitor parking at the hospital has been permanently relocated to 35 Avenue des Etats-Unis, despite being officially reserved for visitors, the lot is already crowded during the week. This raises concerns about how it will accommodate additional vehicles, putting more pressure on an already strained area.
