Eight children were killed by bullets in a case of domestic violence in Louisiana, and the presumed perpetrator was later shot by the police, authorities in Shreveport announced on Sunday. The incident represents the worst massacre in the United States in over two years.
Police were called on Sunday to respond to the violence, and they found victims in two homes, with a third location being part of the investigation.
At least 10 people were shot during the violence that occurred from Saturday night to Sunday, resulting in eight deaths, with victims aged from 1 to 14 years old. Some of the minors killed were children of the presumed perpetrator, according to the Shreveport police officer. Additionally, two adult women were injured by gunshots to the head, and a young man was injured after jumping off a roof.
The suspect in the massacre, whose identity was not revealed, was chased by the police after forcibly taking a car. The police shot and killed him during the pursuit, stating he was the sole person involved in the incident. No officers were injured during the incident.
This incident marks the deadliest shooting in the United States since the death of eight people in a suburb of Chicago in January 2024. Gun Violence Archive data shows that the United States has the highest gun-related mortality rate among developed countries, with more guns in circulation than there are people.
Mass shootings remain a recurring issue that successive governments have failed to contain, with many Americans deeply attached to their firearms. In 2025, nearly 15,000 people were killed by gun violence, excluding suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
