North Korea conducted a new series of ballistic missile launches toward the sea on Sunday morning, marking an escalation of its military activities. This is the fourth launch recorded this month and the seventh since the beginning of the year.

These tests come in the midst of ongoing war in Iran and speculations of possible diplomatic exchanges between Washington and Seoul with Pyongyang.

The projectiles were fired from the Sinpo region on the east coast of the country and traveled approximately 140 kilometers before falling into the sea. South Korean authorities immediately called for an emergency security meeting, denouncing it as a “provocation” constituting a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and calling on Pyongyang to end these tests.

In Seoul, authorities believe that these shows of force are part of a diplomatic pressure strategy. According to several analysts, the increased number of launches aims to demonstrate North Korea’s military capabilities and strengthen the regime’s position ahead of potential discussions with the United States and South Korea.

A former South Korean security adviser, Kim Ki-jong, believes that these tests could also serve as a political signal, showing that Pyongyang has comparable, if not superior, deterrence capabilities compared to other regional powers.

These developments come as US President Donald Trump and South Korean authorities have repeatedly discussed the possibility of resuming dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, although no formal initiatives have been announced.

In this context, several international experts warn of the continued progress of North Korea’s military program, especially in the nuclear and ballistic fields, as Pyongyang now claims to consider its nuclear power status as irreversible.
