French cinema has just lost one of its great figures. Nathalie Baye has passed away at the age of 77, as reported by Le Parisien on Saturday, April 18, 2026. In a statement, her family specified that the actress passed away at her Parisian home on Friday, April 17, 2026. She was suffering from Lewy body disease, a neurodegenerative condition known for also affecting former weather presenter Catherine Laborde. A prominent figure in French cinema and mother of Laura Smet, Nathalie Baye had been causing concern over her health in recent months. She notably canceled her appearance on July 10, 2025 at the inauguration of the Journées de la rose de Doué-la-Fontaine, in Maine-et-Loire, due to hospitalization. Already in a fragile state, she had experienced several health issues in recent years, especially after being hospitalized in 2020 for bronchopulmonary complications.

Nathalie Baye, an emblematic figure

Revealed in 1973 in François Truffaut’s “Day for Night,” Nathalie Baye established herself as one of the leading figures in French cinema. Throughout her career, she worked with top directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Nicole Garcia, Tonie Marshall, Xavier Dolan, and even Steven Spielberg. The former partner of Johnny Hallyday was rewarded four times by the César, including Best Actress in 1983 for “La Balance” and in 2006 for “Le Petit Lieutenant.” The Minister of Culture, Catherine Pégard expressed her sadness at the loss of an immense actress, applauding Nathalie Baye’s exceptional career that illuminated a significant chapter in French cinema history and offering condolences to the film world and all who admired her.

Her love story with Johnny Hallyday and the birth of her only daughter

But perhaps her greatest role will always be that of a mother, to her only daughter Laura Smet, born in 1984 from her relationship with Johnny Hallyday. Separated from the singer in 1986, Nathalie Baye discreetly and tenderly watched over her. Despite the public tensions within the Hallyday clan in recent years, mother and daughter have shared both personal and professional experiences, even appearing on screen together, notably in Xavier Beauvois’ “The Guardians” in 2017. Laura Smet cherished the opportunity to work with her mother, likening it to “being able to drive a Rolls Royce.” The feeling of pride was mutual, with Nathalie Baye stating, “She plays incredibly well, I am very proud of her.” Today, Nathalie Baye is no longer with us, leaving Laura Smet, her loved ones, and the film world in mourning.
